Evidence-Based Information Skills Training Programme (July - September 2012)

Introduction to Reading Research Papers (Quantitative Research)This session will provide participants with an introduction to critically appraising quantitative research study using the example of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) The session will cover the following:

• Overview of the critical appraisal process
• What to look for when appraising a research paper (randomised controlled trial)
• Interpreting statistics
• Group work - appraising of a RCT research paper using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist

Participants will be emailed a copy of the paper that the group will be appraising prior to the session. It is highly recommended that participants read the paper before attending.

Group Training sessions
All group training sessions take place in the E-Learning room (formerly tutorial room) located within the Education Centre. The room is equipped with PCs giving learners the opportunity for hands-on practice and support from the library trainer.

Individual Training
If you are unable to attend the group training please contact the library trainer to arrange an individual training appointment at time convenient for you. The Library also runs drop-in search clinics on Monday and Wednesday between 10am and 4pm where there is no need to book.
